Turn Student Referrals Into Lifelong Divers | One Dive Family Playbook Ep. 10
Sometimes the best thing you can do for your student is send them somewhere else. In Episode 10 of the One Dive Family Playbook, Amanda from SDI Industry Relations sits down with Sam Bennett to discuss the SDI referral process and how connecting students with another SDI facility can create better experiences and more enthusiastic, long-term divers. A student can complete their academics and confined water training with their local SDI instructor, then travel to another SDI facility to complete their open water dives. They can even complete some open water dives locally before finishing the remainder at their destination. This episode covers: • How the SDI Global Referral process works • Why referrals can create better student experiences • Giving new divers exposure to different diving environments • How destination diving can build enthusiasm and confidence • Why referring a student can strengthen, rather than lose, your customer relationship • Connecting with SDI facilities throughout the Caribbean and beyond The goal is bigger than completing a certification. It is creating an experience that makes someone want to keep diving. 👇 Build the relationship. Share the experience. The Hidden World of Sea Slugs: Finding Wonder in the Smallest Creatures | with Karen Gowlett-Holmes
What happens when you look beyond the big animals of the ocean and start paying attention to the small, strange, and often overlooked? 🌊🔬📸 In this episode of Voices Beneath the Waves, host Stephanie Miele, COO of Scuba Diving International (SDI), sits down with Karen Gowlett-Holmes, marine biologist, scientific diver, underwater photographer, Women Divers Hall of Fame member, and lifelong explorer of southern Australia’s extraordinary marine life. Karen’s fascination with the ocean began as a child exploring the shoreline and grew into a remarkable career in marine science. She learned to scuba dive at just 15 years old and discovered that diving could take her directly to the animals she wanted to study, while underwater photography allowed her to document their colors, habitats, and behaviors before those details could be lost through traditional specimen preservation. That work has contributed to an extraordinary scientific legacy. Karen has discovered thousands of previously unknown species, with hundreds subsequently described by scientists and 13 species named in her honor. Her photographs and collected specimens have also become part of permanent museum collections, creating a scientific record that researchers will continue studying for generations. The conversation also explores Karen’s work helping restore Tasmania’s disappearing giant kelp forests. After watching once-abundant forests vanish from the coastline, Karen and her colleagues began experimenting with ways to successfully replant giant kelp. Today, that work has expanded into restoration projects, diver training, internships, and growing patches of regenerated kelp forest. Episode Highlights: 🔬 Discovering the unknown: Why Karen believes we still know only a fraction of what lives beneath the surface. 📸 Photography with a purpose: How beautiful underwater images can become valuable scientific records and inspire conservation. 🐚 A world of invertebrates: From chitons and sea slugs to deep-sea species, Karen reveals why some of the ocean’s smallest creatures deserve our attention. 🌿 Reviving Tasmania’s giant kelp: How experimentation, science, trained volunteer divers, and persistence are helping bring an iconic ecosystem back. 👩🔬 Creating opportunities for the next generation: Karen reflects on overcoming discrimination and encourages young scientists, photographers, and divers to pursue what fascinates them. 🌊 Small actions create big change: Karen reminds us that conservation does not require one person to solve everything. When each of us contributes what we can, those individual efforts can grow into something much larger. And yes, Neil the Seal makes an appearance in the conversation too. 💬 What small marine creature has completely changed the way you look at the underwater world? Open Water Standards Update 2026
n this important announcement, SDI President Brian Carney and Senior Vice President Sean Harrison share a major update to SDI's training standards and the philosophy driving these changes. After extensive consultation with more than 1,000 SDI and TDI professionals worldwide, and following deep reflection inspired by the documentary How to Kill a Mermaid, SDI is taking decisive action to strengthen diver safety and improve training quality. Effective with upcoming standards updates, SDI will: ✅ Reduce the maximum Open Water student-to-instructor ratio from 8:1 to 6:1 ✅ Limit classes containing junior divers (under 15) to a maximum ratio of 4:1 ✅ Restrict a single professional to supervising no more than two junior divers at a time ✅ Establish clearer requirements for environmental and training conditions These changes are rooted in a simple belief: the dive industry can do better. Drawing on decades of experience in diver training, accident investigation, and standards development, Brian explains why SDI is choosing to lead with safety, quality instruction, and realistic best practices—even when it may not be the easiest or most economical path. This is a message about responsibility, professionalism, and the future of diver education. If you're an SDI or TDI professional, dive center owner, instructor, or diver interested in the future of training standards, we encourage you to watch and join the conversation. Ethical Upselling: The Secret to Lifelong Divers | One Dive Family Playbook Ep. 7
The best upselling does not feel like selling. In Episode 7 of the One Dive Family Playbook, SDI Industry Relations discusses the difference between pushing courses and helping divers achieve their goals through honest guidance and education. Every diver enters the sport with different aspirations. Some dream of exploring shipwrecks. Why Follow-Up Matters in Diving | One Dive Family Playbook Ep. 4
One phone call can change everything. In Episode 4 of the One Dive Family Playbook, SDI’s Industry Relations team talks about one of the most overlooked tools in the dive industry: follow-up. Too often, students complete a course and never hear from their instructor or dive center again. Not because people do not care, but because communication becomes automated, impersonal, or forgotten entirely. This episode explores: Why genuine follow-up creates stronger dive communities How personal communication builds trust and long-term loyalty The difference between selling courses and building relationships Why simple conversations lead to more active, educated divers How continued education strengthens and protects the industry Emails and automated systems have their place. But real conversations still matter. When you pick up the phone, check in with your students, and stay connected to your community, you are not just growing a business. You are helping grow diving itself. 👇 Stay connected. Build relationships. Keep divers active. #SDIdivers #OneDiveFamily #DiveIndustry #ScubaTraining #DiveProfessional #CustomerRetention 🔔 Don’t forget to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and HIT THE NOTIFICATION BELL so you never miss an update from the #OnediveFamily! https://www.youtube.com/c/SDITDIERDI SDI - Scuba Diving International: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/scuba-diving-international-sdi Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SDIdivers/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sdidivers/ For more info on Dive Courses: https://www.tdisdi.com/ *Please note that translations in all of our materials are created by a process that utilizes translators in combination with automatically generated content. Why Dive Businesses Struggle and How to Fix It | One Dive Family Playbook Ep. 3
Starting a dive business is easy. Building a successful one is not. In Episode 3 of the One Dive Family Playbook, SDI’s Industry Relations team breaks down the real reasons dive businesses struggle and what you can do differently to succeed. This is not about theory. This is about hard-earned lessons from years of experience in dive shops, operations, and the realities of running a business in today’s industry. This episode covers: Why acceptance is critical to growth in a diverse dive community The difference between passion and business ownership How poor inventory decisions can cost you thousands Why you should question advice and make decisions based on your reality How to grow sustainably without digging yourself into a financial hole Not every diver should own a dive shop. And not every business decision should be driven by emotion. The shops that succeed are the ones that adapt, plan, and make smart, calculated moves. 👇 Build your business with intention. Building Trust in the Dive Industry | One Dive Family Playbook Ep. 2
Trust is the foundation of everything in the dive industry. In Episode 2 of the One Dive Family Playbook, SDI’s Industry Relations team breaks down how trust impacts your customers, your team, and your long-term success as a dive professional or facility. From first-time divers walking into your shop with zero knowledge, to partnerships with other professionals in your area, every interaction is an opportunity to either build trust or lose it. This episode explores: Why lack of education erodes confidence in the industry How transparency and honesty create stronger customer relationships The role of collaboration over competition between dive businesses Why taking the high road always pays off in the long run When you give people the information they need and the freedom to decide, they do not walk away. They come back with confidence. This is how trust turns into loyalty. Student Management in the SDI System | Affiliations, Digital Records, Rosters, and Certification
Are you managing students the fast way, or the right way? In this final session of our SDI System Webinar Series, Juliana Marcy from Training and Membership Services breaks down Student Management from start to finish. This is the behind-the-scenes workflow that keeps your student records clean, your staff aligned, and your certifications moving without delays. Juliana walks you through pro affiliations and why they matter, including the differences between Facility Contact, Facility Administrator, and standard professional affiliations. You will see exactly how privileges work, who can access student information, and how to fully confirm an affiliation using the required two-step acceptance process. From there, the training moves into digital student record folders and the student roster system, giving you a clean way to digitize waivers and medicals, organize classes, track completion, and pull reports when you need them. You will also learn what students see on their end, how pending records are completed, how physician sign-offs are uploaded, and what instructors should verify to protect liability and prevent surprises. Finally, Juliana demonstrates diver registration, showing the full path to certifying a student in the system, including course details, certification delivery options, roster imports, waiver verification when paperwork is offline, and completing payment correctly. If you want fewer bottlenecks, fewer missing forms, and a smoother path from first login to certification, this is the playbook. #SDIdivers #OneDiveFamily #SDI #DiveCenter #ScubaTraining #InstructorTools #DiveShop #StudentManagement #eLearning 🔔 Don’t forget to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and HIT THE NOTIFICATION BELL so you never miss an update from the #OnediveFamily! https://www.youtube.com/c/SDITDIERDI SDI - Scuba Diving International: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/scuba-diving-international-sdi Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SDIdivers/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sdidivers/ For more info on Dive Courses: https://www.tdisdi.com/ *Please note that translations in all of our materials are created by a process that utilizes translators in combination with automatically generated content. DEMA 2025 Seminar Series: Update on DEEP
Kirk Krack of DEEP Research Inc. provides a detailed update on the progress of the organization’s ambitious objective to design, build, and deploy subsea habitats around the world. This year marks a major milestone, as DEEP prepares for its most exciting advancement to date with the launch of the Vanguard habitat in November. The project represents a significant step forward in redefining how humans live, work, and conduct research beneath the ocean’s surface. With a vision centered on developing 21st-century subsea habitats and the advanced technologies required to support them, Kirk guides the audience through the history of underwater habitats while drawing clear parallels to the evolution of scientific saturation diving. He connects past innovations to present-day capabilities, highlighting how decades of technical progress have made long-term human presence underwater not only possible, but practical. This historical context leads to an update on the DEEP Saturation Training Facility, which plays a critical role in preparing divers and scientists for extended missions in extreme subsea environments. DEEP’s work actively supports a wide range of scientific and industrial applications, including mesophotic zone coral research, bottom trawling restoration, bioprospecting, and the monitoring and maintenance of critical underwater infrastructure. Across all these efforts, the guiding principle remains consistent. Keeping the human in the loop is central to DEEP’s core mission, ensuring that direct human observation, decision-making, and adaptability remain essential components of subsea exploration and problem solving. 🔔 Don’t forget to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and HIT THE NOTIFICATION BELL so you never miss an update from the #OnediveFamily! https://www.youtube.com/c/SDITDIERDI SDI - Scuba Diving International: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/scuba-diving-international-sdi Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SDIdivers/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sdidivers/ For more info on Dive Courses: https://www.tdisdi.com/ *Please note that translations in all of our materials are created by a process that utilizes translators in combination with automatically generated content. DEMA 2025 Seminar Series: How standards are designed and developed in the RSTC / ISO
The seminar on how standards were designed and developed within the RSTC and ISO delivered one of the most valuable industry conversations at the DEMA Show 2025. The session created a rare forum where the process of shaping global training requirements was explained with transparency, authority, and collaborative intent. Representatives from multiple dive training agencies led an open, structured discussion about what standards actually meant, how they were debated, reviewed, rewritten, balloted, tested, and ultimately published for international adoption. The panel described how safety, training efficiency, equipment specifications, environmental realities, and human factors were encoded into written requirements that later guided instructors, course directors, and facilities worldwide. The conversation covered the friction between innovation and cautious iteration, the challenge of applying universal frameworks in very different dive environments, and the responsibility of maintaining rigor without slowing progress to a standstill. Unlike most conference seminars, this session wasn't built around selling ideas, it was built around answering real questions and admitting how imperfect the process had sometimes felt before solutions were refined. Attendees were encouraged to challenge assumptions, question governance pathways, and contribute constructive viewpoints. The audience responded immediately because they finally saw how decisions were shaped: one measured argument, one revision draft, and one safety debate at a time. DEMA 2025 Seminar Series: How Big Is Tech Diving?
Back by popular demand, Brian Carney once again presented highly anticipated data on the size and scope of the technical diving market. Over the years, his annual analysis has evolved into a cornerstone session for professionals who want to understand where the industry has been and where it is heading. His presentation has become a favorite within the community because it does more than report numbers. It traces the story of technical diving’s global expansion, revealing how training demand, technology, and diver expectations have transformed since the early days of mixed-gas exploration. This year’s session continued that tradition. For the third time in the past decade, TDI released its certification numbers, offering one of the most transparent snapshots available in the diving world. These figures document the steady rise of technical training, the diversification of course pathways, and the increasing influence of advanced diving disciplines on the broader market. By placing historical data alongside current performance, Brian illustrated not only how far the agency has come but also how much the field itself has matured. The data underscores a powerful story. It charts the agency’s sustained growth and highlights key milestones that have shaped technical diving into a dynamic, globally interconnected community. At the same time, it provides a benchmark that helps facilities, instructors, and divers evaluate emerging trends, anticipate future needs, and understand the direction in which the technical diving community is moving. In many ways, the presentation serves as both a historical archive and a forward-looking roadmap, capturing the momentum of an industry driven by innovation, exploration, and a relentless pursuit of pushing boundaries. DEMA 2025 Seminar Series: Women Navy Diver Veterans Roundtable
At DEMA, we had the incredible opportunity to host a roundtable with veteran women Navy divers—trailblazers who literally broke barriers both above and below the surface. From EOD divers defusing danger in extreme conditions to members of the Women Divers Hall of Fame, these women carved paths in a profession that demands courage, grit, and resilience. During the seminar, they shared their journeys candidly, recounting the challenges they faced as women in a male-dominated field, the intense training and dangerous missions, and the moments of triumph that made it all worth it. Their stories were raw, inspiring, and unapologetically real, giving attendees a glimpse into a world few get to see. What stood out most was the sheer determination and perseverance these women carried throughout their careers. They didn’t just survive in one of the toughest professions in the world—they thrived, paving the way for future generations of divers. Participants left inspired, reminded of the power of courage, passion, and pushing past limits. This seminar wasn’t just about diving—it was about breaking barriers, rewriting history, and honoring the women who dared to go deeper than anyone thought possible. 🔔 Don’t forget to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and HIT THE NOTIFICATION BELL so you never miss an update from the #OnediveFamily! https://www.youtube.com/c/SDITDIERDI 📍 Listen & Subscribe to Between Two Corals: 🎧 Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5KLopobLgxlzYgD5GrU7YN?si=cYeys1vgRAmOLtsYNAl3dA 🍏 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/between-2-corals-a-one-dive-family-podcast/id1806130202?itscg=30200&itsct=podcast_box&ls=1&mttnsubad=1806130202 📍 Listen & Subscribe to Voices Beneath the Waves: 🎧 Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/73cu8QZVAFfolpc21hPaYl 🍏 Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/voices-beneath-the-waves/id1806336175 SDI - Scuba Diving International: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/scuba-diving-international-sdi Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SDIdivers/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sdidivers/ For more info on Dive Courses: https://www.tdisdi.com/ *Please note that translations in all of our materials are created by a process that utilizes translators in combination with automatically generated content.
